Just found Apteka. A great band from Chicago. Everyone is calling them shoe gaze. I see that, but would say that rather it is like shoegaze the wants to punch you in the face. Very much like another LSD favorite Dirty on Purpose (who have actually broken up). I bought the 7" vinyl for their new song "Traitors" on Record Store Day. It, along with an EP, is free on their Bandcamp page. Check it.

Serena Maneesh "SM Backwards"

No Music today, but some cool news. I just got word from the Serena Maneesh people that their new album "SM Backwards" which compiles their two previous import only releases for a US a release, will be in stores sometime this fall. Originally, they had reported that the record would be out in early May. However, early May came and went with no release. After looking around the net I found that no one had any info, so I decided to email them myself. Below is their response:

hey bo thanks for writing.. well it has just been postponed. just took a little more time to get it ready.. so release is set for early fall. just over the summer. will let you know.

i found a suckadelic cd in the bargain bin today for $2 and the fact that he used cartoon villains for the vocals intrigued me. i figured, ive bought shit for $2 that im never going to listen to again so i might as well give this one a shot too. turns out, it is insane. the beats are good, the tracks are funky, and the cartoon samples are killer. i couldnt find free mp3's other than the samples on his website but i suggest checking those out and maybe even ordering something. if suckadelic wants to throw a free mp3 our way to tempt the listeners, even cooler. otherwise i guess its just a few free clips. the nerd in me totally approves.

The Colour Revolt are quite interesting. Their press kit bio tells me nothing except that maybe they like dogs. But that doesn't matter when you rock this hard and this smart. There is one thing in the press kit that gets it correct: "there’s a lot of guitars in Colour Revolt. But they’re not dumb guitars." Not that we have anything against dumb guitars. One could argue that the Ramones are "dumb guitars" but you better not say that around me if you value the look of your face. Colour Revolt has a fresh aggressiveness, but an educated sense of atmosphere. It all works together to form one tasty sammy......yum...sandwiches....

I can't find any information on Bitch, but I like this song. I got it from Kill Rock Stars, Her (Their???) label. It sounds a lot like St. Vincent, but vocally it is more pop, though the instrumentation still have that classical orchestra chamber rock thing. Really a nice listen.

This band reminds me a lot of some early 90's stuff. This track has a guy singing, but I have heard another with the girl singing and they reminded me of a female fronted Bloc Party. Though let me clarify, that would be the Bloc Party of old, before they picked a synth and drum machine. Pretty rawkus stuff. This song has a nice thick cloud of fuzz and pretty buried vocals, which I love. It sounds all warm and toasty.

I have been dying to discover something that I really like. I was tired of looking at all the end of the year "best of" lists and being disappointed. Then I cam across Luke Doucet. Originally from Canada he has played in a number of bands and seems to be most successful in his solo work. He was nominated for the Juno award in 2006, but lost to Neil Young. What that means is that this album is almost as good as Neil Young's 2006 effort Prairie Wind. I think that is pretty good company to be in. These two songs come from his 2008 album Blood's Too Rich. There is a lot on this album to like. Stylistically Doucet isn't breaking new ground, but neither are 99% of artists that have ever made anything. However, he is quite the master at crafting a melody that sounds at once familiar and modern. . I am not sure who sings back up with him, but her voice melts into his quite well. I enjoy his lyrics too. He sings about sad memories, and hopeful futures and in the end makes me want to keep on listening.

the first single from the upcoming drive by truckers album!!! i know i have proclaimed my love for them before, and i will do it again. and again. and again. the new album comes out jan. 22 and i suggest you all buy it. this is the first album since jason isbell (who is going on a large tour this winter) left the band and from what i hear so far it is going to be just as awesome as anything they have ever put out. this album will even have songs written and sung by shonna, the normally silent bass player, which i am excited to hear. this track is a cooley track and it is fantastic. get it, love it, and give love to the DBT

I love the new Kevin Drew album Sprit If..... This version of "Safety Bricks" comes from a recent radio appearance. It is way more laid back than the original, but sometimes that is okay. Ok so we have been away a long time and one of the songs that I loved during our downtime was Spoon's "The Underdog." The horns are fantastic. They play nice with the melody and adds a nice demension to things. I really like Spoon's singles, but haven't been much for an entire album at this point. I am also including my other favorite Spoon song "I Turn My Camera On" in case you missed that one when it came out 2 years ago. It is one of the best Prince rip-offs I have ever heard, and I mean that in a totally positive way. Their new album Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga has been out for awhile and is making all the eary top 50 album of the year lists. I am haven't been intruiged enough to get it yet, but we shall see.

This has the sound of a record that would sell whether I talked about it or not. The recording budget was either really high or these guys know how to stretch a dime. I have seen the name Pinback everywhere lately, and honestly thought they were some crap ass emo/metal band that somehow got through everyone's indie radar. I guess the name sounds too much like Nickelback or something, I don't know. Anyway, this isn't bad at all. I haven't heard it enough to develop a love for it (like I currently have for Lucero's "I Can Get Us Out of Here Tonight"), but I don't hate it either. I think this is something that I will love after it pops up a few times on the ol' ipod. I am not posting a picture because I think the cover art to their new album is crap.

here is a track from the band that opened up at the reverend peyton show last month that rocked me oh so hard. creepin' charley is another indiana band that i think is wonderful. i had seen their cd's for sale around different record stores in indy and it intrigued me but i never picked it up. i definitely did at the show. the vocals remind me a bit of gregg allman, and the guitar work is great. no duane allman, but then again, who is? enjoy.

Bats for Lashes was up for the Mercury Prize this year. If you give it to them (her) then you have to give it to My Brightest Diamond and St. Vincent too. They all sound the same at first listen. They even have the same affinity for horses (Bringing Down the Horse). That said, it is brilliantly good. The production is amazing and her voice is celestial. It is just hard for anyone without a loud guitar because they automatically get compared to all the others people without loud guitars. Oh well, so it goes. Great picture too eh?

Easy Anthems are great. They are a husband wife team that has put out their new album for free online. If you like it of course I am sure you could send them some cash. I highly suggest giving it a listen. It has a bit of a folk feel without going too far. Vanessa sings lead on this one and her voice sounds beautiful. The string swells are heart wrenching. Both of them sing on most of the songs which I think adds a lot of good contrast. This is a slow one, but I think it is one of the best on the album. It is one of those songs that kept popping up on my iPod and I would have to look and see who it was because I thought it was great. Back to work for me today...Oh Boy.....

thursday night i went to the cd release party for reverend peyton and the big damn band's new cd, "the gospel album." this was the first time i have ever gotten a chance to see them live and man were they awesome. both opening bands ( creepin' charley and the boneyard orchestra and murder by death) were awesome as well. the track for today come s from the forthcoming release of "the gospel album." i got a special limited edition copy of it and what i have listened to it since i got home from the show is great. kick ass show and the reverend himself is one hell of a guitar player.

yes, we are still alive and still listening to damn good music. it all started with a bit of a break for our little brothers wedding and well, turned into an extended leave of absence, but i plan on being back and im sure i can talk bo into it too. this track is from the upcoming album by sould singer bettye lavette. yes, it is true i never would have given this a second look if it werent for the drive by truckers being her backing band throughout the album, but im glad i did. as ive mentioned before i do love the drive by trucker. you can tell it is them backing her on this track (along with some additional musicians...legend spooner oldham perhaps) but it isnt a drive by truckers song at all. very good song. on the anti- website there are a few more free mp3's from ms lavette. i really like the song down to zero. cherk her out and i hope we didnt lose all of you lovely people that come check us out.

I really liked the songs I heard from their last album, thought I never did get around to buying the thing. If I could have actually heard them at Lollapalooza last year maybe I would have, but I remember the sound sucking really bad for them (and the Shins). ex drive by trucker jason isbell put out his first solo album tuesday and i think it is great. a mix of loud and soft songs, piano and overdriven guitars, and lots of that great guitar work from mr. isbell himself. this is the opening track on the album. my favorite song on the album is "dress blues," a song i loved when i saw him perform it back with the drive by truckers. there are guest appearances from many members of the mighty DBT on the album. i reccomend going out and finding this album. its is all kinds of good!

Something a bit more mainstream, but not in a bad way. This sounds like the cool band your friend is in. last night i got to see the polyphonic spree at the vogue. first off let me tell you how amazing it was. i would say it is in the top 5 of all the concerts ive ever attended. amazing. if you have a chance to see them, go. i command you.

but anyway, here is the opener from the show. apparently she worked as a nanny for tom waits for some time and that is where she got "discovered" if you will. she has great vocals and interesting music. most of what i saw her play was keys and acoustc guitar. there was one song that hadsome crazy beats though. not sure what it was but it was killer. i have nothing else to say, it was a long ass weekend and im exhausted. enjoy.

I really like this song. One of my favorites that we have posted lately. It almost seems like two songs. The first bit is slow and wandering country and then it suddenly turns in a pop song. Pretty cool transition. Then to top that the last verse is in Spanish! Overall a great song with fantastic backing vocals. By the way, there are two band that go by this name. This is the younger one. I could only find pictures of the other (older) one. They reside at .net while the band I am talking about lives @.com. Enjoy and have a dafe weekend. Well I talked yesterday about Prince and I finally found a legit, free, legal copy of his new single "Guitar" It was part of some crazy marketing scheme you could hold your Verizon phone up to a speaker it would recognize the song and you could download it. Well I found it on Sony's website. Suck it Verizon! I love the hell out of this song. Prince is amazing and he is not only one of the best songwriters in the history of rock and roll, but one of the best guitar players. I think people forget that when they see him being weird. This song is very very similar to "Fury" from his last album 3121 but without the over-production that "Fury" ended up getting once it made to the album. This is Prince sounding raw, live and organic. Hopefully this is a good indication of what the new album will be.

Oh yeah, Happy 4th wedding anniversary to me.

The actual album is going to be called Broken Social Scene presents...Kevin Drew "Spirit If" Looks to me like this is as close as were are going to get to anything resembling a new BSS album. This song for sure has that BSS sound and that is all I really ask for. I will be waiting at my local record shop for this one.

Sorry for my lack of posts lately. I have been sucked into this Prince bootleg series that I downloaded over the weekend. It is 24 discs of alternate takes, demos, unreleased stuff. I am just about to loose my mind. Some of it is amazing and some is utter crap. There is no way I am going to burn all 24 discs, so I have to start cutting them up, but my completest nature won't allow. I think I have heard 10 of them so far. Damn...I am all purple inside....

im assuming the name came from the old murder ballad "stagger lee," (which is amazingly done on nick cave and the bad seeds murder ballads album. i reccomend you go buy that one right now. it is phenomenal.) this band is more of that country-ish rock that i love so much. they have a few otehr songs up for download from previous albums but this one is from their latest album which is in stores now. The slide guitar work blew me away in this song. the vocals are again, that southern sounding vocals i love so dearly. i should have been born in alabama i think. "your momma know youre a cowboy???" enjoy. and if you know of any other bands similar to this one, DBT, lucero, or last weeks post, chuch, let me know. i love it.

This is a remix by this guy. He has worked with lots of old R/B people and now makes electronic music. Seems and odd route to take. He went from the most soul to the least soul. This is an old Mahalia Jackson song and this guy puts a beat and some groove to it. It reminds me a bit of "Standing outside a Broken Telephone Booth With Money in My Hand" in that it takes an old song and ands new funk to it. My only complain is that it seems a bit one demensional. The beat never really changes and the song drags a bit, but I thought it was cool.

This guy is responsible for the wonders that are the Pipettes. Well that may be a stretch, but I have always wondered who I should thank for bringing them to us. He is one of the principal song writers for the band and plays guitar behind them. The full title of this song is actually "The Closest Experience to That of Being With You Is The Experience of Taking Drugs". It has a bit of that sweet Pipettes feel, but instead of being dressed in a cute polka dot dress, it comes drapped in static and noise. I am going to warn you that last 10 seconds are pretty harsh. I think even Phil would agree and that is saying a alot.

I don't like doing bands that I see there only because someone already found them for me, but I kept playing this over and over so I thought I should tell more people about it. This is Copperpot the hip-hop producer, not the rock band of the same name. From what I can gather this guy does his thing out of Chicago. This is a great use of an old song as the sample. I guess it is "Perhaps, Perhaps". My only real exposure to that song was as the theme song for hilarious British comedy "Coupling". KRS-One graces this track with his cold-steely flows and I couldn't imagine it any other way. KRS-One is one smooth MC.

Looking the pictures and reading a bit about them, I thought they would sound way different than what I first heard "Glittering Heels"(another song from the debut album Every Mother's Child). The I heard "Love in an Alley" and my orignal assumptions were affirmed. Since "Love in and Alley is my favorite of the two I thought I would send you in that direction. Upon entering their website you are greeted with what is a holy maxim in our universe, "the easiet songs are the most beautiful." Now how can you not agree with that? Think about Amazing Grace. It is a simple repetitive chord progression and one of the most beautiful song ever written. This is indeed a simple song. Nothing sounds terrible difficult to play (that is coming from one of the two idiots that took 2 hours to learn "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue"). The voice is great and that is all I need to say. I just need to keep it simple.

this is one wicked 3 piece band from good ol' indiana. guitar, washboard, and drums. the guitar work by rev. peyton is fantastic. very delta blues-ish. this album was recorded live with basically no overdubs and it rocks my ass. sure you cant always understand the lyrics but the music makes up for that. i just recently found out about this band, but i love them! and as a fan of beards, let me jsut say, the reverend has one fantastic beard.

Here is something I just grabbed off of the WOXY playlist. It only took me two random bands before I got one that I really thought was good. Their website describes them as "space/drone rock from Dayton, Ohio." It has that Sereena-Manessh/MBV haze to it. Everything sounds like it is in soft focus. Not hearing anything else from the record I am going to have to say that this is the pop song. It clocks in at just over 2 minutes. That doesn't exactly seem "drone" worthy to me, but since I like this one, I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume that the rest of the album is filled with 12 minute "droners."

This one took about three listens, but once I got over the Irish accent, I was really digging it. The verses are light acoustic guitar picking affairs, almost folky. Then the chorus comes in and the entire band joins in the chanting. That is where it really takes off. You get the image of a small village singing along to this Irish folk song. I really liked and think i will go get drunk now.

sorry folks, no mp3 today, instead its album review day! "ghost stories" by chantal kreviazuk was not an album i ever would have thought about picking up, or even known about. however i was sent a copy and after listening to it i was quite surprised. the opening track, "ghosts of you," which to me is teh standout track on the album, begins with a swell of strings that leads into an almost dark song full of beautiful piano, thumping drums and the sweet voice of chantal kreviazuk. the songs are all written very well, which you would expect from someone who has written songs for popsters gwen stefani and avril lavigne among others. dont let that change your mind however because this sounds absoultely nothing like the two of them. im sure all female musicians who play piano hate this, but her voice is a lot like tori amos in my opinion. the songs all contain lots of gorgeous instrumentation. the strings are all over the place and even seem to take a lead role in some songs even over the piano. my other favorite track on the album is the song "blame yourself." this is the one that really made me think of tori amos, but again, im sure these kind of comparisons are done to death with all female pianists/singers. but seriously, listen to the song "blame yourself" and tell me you dont hear a lot of tori in there. you can stream the album on her website, and i reccomend doing that. there are a few weaker tracks on the album that just seem to fade into the background to me, but overall i enjoyed the album. go to her website, stream a few songs and decide for yourself. have a good weekend.

The title of their debut album was "I am a Bird Now" It seems to imply that Antony is now free and able to fly away. The sadness of being earthbound up to this point comes across in this track. Antony quavers like a crying bird. He seems just dying to be free. Dying to be with someone that loves him. I always expected Antony to have a pretty high voice, but this seems damn near baritone. I remember hearing things from this years ago when it came out and it never really grabbed me. I guess today is a different day. I really did feel the sadness that is projected in this track. Antony seems to be laying himself out bear for us all to see, and that takes guts.

again, thanks to stereogum for this one. ive never known much about nick drake. id heard his name and used to get him confused with nick cave until i learned they are very different musically. not to mention that nick drake has been dead since the early 70's. anyway, this track is apparently from a new collection of demos and unreleased stuff he recorded. i love this song, which figures since it is an old blues song. it is done extremely well here and it maikes me want to go check out more nick drake stuff. great guitar playing and his vocals definitely have the beaten down blues feel to them. great song and like i said, i think im going to check out nick drake soon, which may be hard considering ill have little to no money before too long, but thats anotehr story for another day.

I heard about these guy from My Old Kentucky Blog They are from Kentucky and are composed of the the ashes of other groups in the area (including VHS or Beta). They have a great soft focus feel to them even though the riffs are a bit agressive. They remind me of Hum in that the guitars are rocking way hard, but the vocals are soft and airy. Their debut comes out in June, but if you are dying for more you can stream a few more songs from their MySpace page. You can also buy some of the tracks there, somehow. I hate MySpace so I try to get in and get out when dealing with anything in that neck of the woods.

kenny childers is THE hardest working guy in the indianapolis music scene. no doubt about it. when i went to the musical family tree showcase at the midwest music summit last yaer, and he played 3 sets that night alone. he was part of the mysteries of life, panic attacks! and gentleman caller. (maybe even something else. i feel like there was a 4th but i forget.) anyway, this is his main project it seems. this song is a lot different than anything off of the first gentleman caller album. this one is a bit more uptempo and has more of a driving drumbeat provided by freda love (of mysteries of life, blake babies and some girls fame). Kenny writes one hell of a catchy song and this one is no exception. this track is an exclusive to the musical family tree website that i love so much. as always, go there, check things out and find something you like. have a good weekend y'all.

Got this one in our suggestion box and I was honestly blown away. This girl has a fantastic voice! That is what hits you first. The title would seem to imply lifelessness, but this track is anything but. Being a budding recording engineer myself, I can't help but comment on the warmth of the track. In stark contrast to the title, the song is very warm and inviting. You feel like you know it as soon as it begins. My only complaint is that it ends way too soon! It reminds me of "The Greatest" by Cat Power in that respect. Both songs just stop. They reach the point where you feel like you could sing along and then they stop. It is abrupt, but well done. It leaves you wanting more and that is how you know something is good. She has an EP coming out soon called "All the Fables." I am getting me a copy.

I don't know much about these guys. I had been seeing an ad for their new video for this song on Sterogum for what seemed like ages, but I had never heard them. So, I set the Tivo up to capture their performance on Last Call with Carson Daily, and waited until the next day. I was pretty much blown away. The live version featured the vocal intro much more prominently and I really liked that. It was an odd melody from a a guy with an odd voice. It was a lot less produced and the vocal really stood out. It was really nice and sweet sounding. This is a faithful version of what I heard from that night. Well worth all the hype.

I have loved My Brightest Diamond ever since I saw them (her) open up for Sufjan Stevens last fall. Their debut is one of those albums that you have to be in the mood for simply because of the heavy atmosphere it brings along with it. I think this song is what Tori Amos would sound like (bless her heart) if she were still relevant. It is creepy, gothic, and full of fantatic sounds. Her voice is one of my favorites. It is at the same time, haunting and familiar. When she says, "I hit the wall so hard, I had to talk to Jesus" you seem to believe her. Her voice sounds like she has been there and done that. so this song started and i thought, " am i playing zelda? zelda freaking rules!!" Once the ocarina intro stopped and the music kicked in i thought it was like the talking heads if they had stayed up playing dungeons and dragons all night. the drumbeat carries along like "road to nowhere" by the talking heads and he is singing about saving maidens and slaying dragons. how cool is that shit??? an ocarina solo in the middle and bam! right back into the "huzzah huzzah" chorus! freaking awesome! i love this song. maybe its the high school nerd in me coming out. i would have definitely listened to this sitting around in brian and matt rose's basement eating doritos and drinking mt dew straight from the 2 liter! my bastard sword does 2d10 damage on that draconian!!! hell yeah!!!

Clean, cheery piano greets us as the track starts. Wright begins to sing in her somewhat smokey voice. Were not talking 2 packs a day here, but maybe she smoked a bit on college. She isn't Tara Reid, but she isn't Kelly Clarkson. I like the reverb filled halls that pack the chorus. I will say that the verse seems to be filler that keeps us waiting until the next chorus, but I will also add that I like the bridge here. I don't often write a bridge for a lot of my songs becuase I find them to be song writing tools that everyone thinks they have to use. Often I feel they get used out of duty rather than in the interest of the song. However, the melody here adds something to the overall product.

friday i went to indy to check out yo la tengo with a couple coworkers of mine. this was the opening band and i thought they were great. a noisy little 3 piece with dums, keys and guitar. yo la tengo rocked as well. i reccomend checking them out if they come around anytime soon. i didnt know anything by them really, other than the song i posted on here long ago. times new viking seemed very bouncy on stage and they were great to watch. thiey have one other song up on their website which also has the same distorted and hard to understand vocal quality, but like this one, i like it too. check it out!

Yet anther big song. Though, instead of large soaring guitars, we get nervous ticks. There seems to be a stutter that infects everything around it, even the the drums. The only the bass escapes unharmed. This reminds me a bit of At the Drive-In. Those guys were amazing. The tracks draws to a close with heavy emphsis on a piano that seems to appear out of nowhere, but like the only Faith No More song anyone cares about, it takes us out on a pretty note.

My favorite song are those that are really long and have a meoldy to take you all the way through. A great example would be "Those Theiving Birds" from the new Silverchair album Young Modern. Which isn't available in America yet and irritatingly has no American release date set. Go ahead laugh, I listen to Silverchair. Then put your ignorance away and get Diorama. If you are still laughing after that, then I just can't relate to you. Anyway, Hooray for Earth are big. They just sound big. This song's soaring keyboards sound very hopeful. They remind me a lot of the Killers at certain points. The bass and guitar play really well with one another, creating not just a wall of fuzz, but a nice fabric of sound. Hooray for Hooray for Earth (remember my Pitchfork comment from Tuesday?)
